Minutes from 93rd Annual Gable Family Reunion

August 7, 2016, it was a bright sunny day reaching 82 degrees with a pleasant breeze. Total attendance for the 2016 reunion was 43 people. The President of the reunion, Vicki Arthur started off the day with a welcome to all while we assembled into a circle outside the barn.  “America the Beautiful” was sung followed with “The Lord’s Prayer” to begin the abundant feast.

No deaths or births were reported for 2016.  Marriages included:

·       Catherine Paige Weber to Justin Reynolds on Sept 5, 2015

President Vicki Arthur shared a trivia question about Hawaii stating how the Islands came to be from lava flow rising from a crack in the earth floor.  The only inhabitants had to fly or swim.  Who was the first mammal to occupy the islands?

“Bats” was the answer.  The world’s only flying mammal.

The Secretaries report was given by Bill Young

The Treasurer’s report was given by Abigail Delp with an ending balance of $415.35 in 2016.

Historian report:  opened by Dale Schlicher who brought old family pictures to share and had them on display in the barn. Lowell Hawk spoke about Clarence Hawk( his father) who gathered information over the years.  Lowell shared a document from his father’s collection which explained about an example of immigration in the 1700’s where a couple from Germany had no one to sponsor them to enter America.  They contacted some current land owners in PA.  This couple had nothing except the clothing on their back.  Land owners said they would map out a section of land to work with mules to clear the property.  They were expected to farm the land and share the crops.  The Husband did the farm work and the Wife did the house chores and canning.  After 2 years the couple could keep the property and the slate was wiped clean of debt.  Lowell plans to locate a document that related to Gable family.  Lowell has an antique paper weight he plans to donate to auction at the Zionsville Lutheran Church where the Gable tombstones are located.  A request was submitted to the reunion to assist in restoring or memorializing the brother and sister tombstones.

Website Report:  Daryl explained there is two sides the website:

1)    Family Tree

2)    Tribal Pages

Contact Daryl by email with any updates or to gain access to family tree information.  A request was made for families to take ownership of their family tree information and work with Daryl for updates.
